Diversity Ballet
lesson for everyone
The ballet lesson for beginners from Alina Zvereva — dancer, choreographer and teacher, graduate of the Academy of Russian Ballet, the owner of the ballet studio called Lets ballet!

«I will show that everybody can do ballet, the main thing is to learn basic principles and find a "your" teacher who will believe in you and your style of dancing. Russian ballet school has a very serious base, but for a young people studying professional ballet sometimes its very hard to understand how really you want to dance, do you really feel and realize your body? A beautiful picture on the stage is given by hard work and blood, so there is a stereotype that ballet is an art only for the elite and if you not thin and young you should not start. Its very sad, but girls who has a big dream to dance just forgot about it because of the stereotypes I want to make something with it. In my classes, we will first learn to listen to ourselves and our body, move in dance, enjoy music.

No violence and hard discipline. My task — move, breathe and relax. We will study dancing etudes and, maybe, we will create something incredible together!»

Cultural Response to the "Propaganda Law"
Выход
What could be the cultural response to the "propaganda law"? What's the best way to organize a dialogue about LGBT issues with society? Could such topics be adressed in places other than courtrooms by poeple other than advocates and human right activists.

We invite all civil initiatives to share their experiences.

For 5 years, since 2013, the Russian LGBT-community faces the "propaganda law". Officially, the law forbids the spread of any LGBT issues in society. In fact, it is an instrument of repression. Websites that support LGBT teenagers or memebers of the LGBT community with HIV are being blocked. Initiatives that promote tolerance, acceptance and diversity, such as the diversity house are really hard to realize.

In the context of the unawareness of LGВT issues, it has become really important to start a dialogue with society. The "QueerFest" became the cultural reponse — international, awareness-raising and human rights-protecting festival. It is a safe place for a public and respectful dialogue about human rights аnd cultural self-experession of different identities. How do you account for the "propaganda law"?

Support don't punish
informal conference
26th June 2018 will be the 6th Day of Action for the Support Don't Punish campaign that calls for better drug policies anchored in public health and human rights. Last year, thousands of people across 205 cities in 93 countries took part in the 5th Global Day of Action.

26th June is also the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking – a day when many governments celebrate their 'contributions' to the global 'war on drugs'. In the past, some governments have even commemorated this day by holding public executions or beatings of drug offenders. By taking part in the Global Day of Action, you can help to reclaim the message of this important day.

26th June is also the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture – an ironic coincidence given the widespread torture and abuse suffered in the name of the war on drugs.

Become a guest at an informal conference on humane drug policies, decriminalization of drug use, and harm reduction programs for drug users.

Are we, while being fans of our own people, stop aknowledging the others?
Public Talk
We will discuss political identity and the problem of racism in today's sports with Vitaly Gorokhov, associate professor of the Faculty of Comparative Political Studies of the North-West Institute of Management of the RANEPA.

Sports have a great potential in terms of constructing political identities. Such labels as "ours" and "not ours" give a socio-political character to sports rivalry in the public space. The competitive nature of sports assumes the superiority of some over others, which makes sports a universal platform for demonstrating to others the own strength and power.

We will analyze where the idea of "ours" comes from and how sports fanaticism and its need to constantly demonstrating superiority is connected to the ills of society. Focusing on the problem of racism in sports, we will discuss, whether the fans can be considered guilty of spreading racism and whether modern sports can combat it.

Public Talk
According to Levada Center and "Public Veredict" Fundation, half of Russians do not trust the police. Why does this happen? What kind of police do we want? And what do we need to know about the police, in order to trust them? We will discuss all this during the meeting "Police for people" together with activists and observers.

Dmitry Ostryakov and Gleb Paikachev from the Joint Public Monitoring Group will talk about their project "Police Map", which they launched this month. They gathered in this map relevant information on the departments and precincts of St. Petersburg, together with feedback from visitors and detainees. Volunteers of the Group conducted a monitoring in 2017, on the basis of which they created a rating of departments, regarding their openness and accessibility.

A similar study was conducted by Dmitry Vorobyov, a volunteer of the Assistance Group for Detainees, during mass detentions in 2017, collecting detainees' reviews of the departments. Dmitry Vorobyov will explain in what conditions people were kept, what opinion do they have about it and what did they pay attention to.

"Grassroots" (2018, Russia)
film screening
Ecoactivism in Russia is one of the bright manifestations of a civic position. People are more willing to mobilize and unite when it is necessary to protect their native land and small homeland. Civil processes during "ottepel" and "perestroika" partly began with environmental protection. Today ecoactivists are more under attack than others. Physical protection, blocking of illegal actions of builders, duty points and tent camps - these are the basic tools of ecologists when we say about direct struggle for nature even under the threat of loss of personal freedom. Some activists had to emigrate, and some did not have time and get a real prison sentence.

The film "Grassroots" examines three bright events of environmental struggle — in Karelia, Krasnodar and in the Voronezh region, and on their example the film answers the main questions facing environmental activists. We hear the voices of many of them and listen to the opinions of experienced environmental defenders: Evgenia Vitishko, Andrei Rudomakhi, Konstantin Rubakhin, Suren Gazaryan, Grigory Kuksin, Evgenia Chirikova, Tatyana Chestina and many others.

Diversity Ballet
Masterclass for everybody
Classical ballet's strict basis is used all over the world as a learning method, nonetheless this method brings often in professional schools to children being hurt psychologically. It is difficult to understand to which extent people really want to dance and to which extent do they feel and realize their body.

A beautiful picture on the stage is achieved only through hard work and blood, for this reason there is the stereotype that only few selected people can dance ballet. And that if you don't have the right physical characteristics for it, then you shouldn't even start. Such pressure leads to the fact that girls who dreamed all their life about ballet, but had a different body, grew up with a feeling of inferiority. And it is necessary to do something with this feeling.

Alina Zvereva opened a ballet studio called Lets ballet! and offers master classes of Diversity Ballet:

"Everybody can dance ballet, the main thing is to learn the basic principles and find the right pedagogue, who will believe in you and your style of dancing.
During the classes we will especially learn to listen to ourselves and our bodies, move and enjoy the music. There won't be any violence or hard discipline. My task is to identify the strengths and help the dancer to liberate and relax himself. We will study etudes and, perhaps, we will create something incredible together!"

Debates of Democracy Club "What To Do?"
Final
Since last week, everybody is debating how the FIFA should react to the behaviour of the Swiss internationals with Kosovan background. First, Swiss international,Xherdan Shaqiri, was wearing boots, displaying the Kosovan Flag. The FIFA stated that they don't consider that as a political gesture. Then, Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri celebrated their goals by gesturing the two-headed eagle on Albania's national flag. Many interpreted that gesture as a support of Kosovo and Albania uniting.
The FIFA punished the two Swiss Internationals and their captain for a lack of sportsmanship.
This situation, similar political gestures and how the FIFA should react to such topics will be discussed during the next debates.

Mega-events: who is at the helm
public talk
We're going to talk about the power geometry between global, national and local levels in modern sport with the associate professor of the policy searches faculty of the Nord-West Management Institute Vitaliy Gorohov.
Usually mega-events are considered quintessence of globalization of sport where rules of the game are regulated by "the love triangle" – alliance of the international sport organization, transnational business and the world media. At the same time, there is a struggle for conducting of mega-events between state, which consider the conducting of the biggest sport forums like an important part of the agenda and even like "a national project". With that, the local communities, having the mega-events been going on their territory, get possibility to express themselves to global auditory. We're going to discuss why mega-events become a platform for realization of interest of different levels and how that fits the logic of conducting of mega events.

Pavel Klimenko and Piara Povar from "Fare Network" will join to the discuss. The organization that is fighting against discrimination in football, including migrants, refugees and representatives of LGBT-community and support their rights with the help of football.

"Loud and proud. Talk with the English Defence League"
Film screening and discussion
In the wake of Europe's growing immigration wave are emerging many ultra-right and nationalist organizations that do not accept new rules or religions, their state's policies or the existing migration regulations. This film tells the story of the English Defence League, an organization that opposes radical Islam, as well as any of its branches, which, in their opinion, threaten the established British way of life and democratic principles.

The film's authors show the situation from the point of view of the members of the League, they try to understand the reasons for their discontent and talk about the possibility of interaction between different vital and ideological positions. Viewers are encouraged to comprehend the documentary material from a research position.

After the film, there will be a discussion with the director and sociologist Dmitry Omelchenko from the Center for Youth Studies of the Higher School of Economics.
